BREAKING: Kamala Harris Officially Becomes Democratic Presidential Nominee to battle Donald Trump
Good morning from Washington, D.C. Last night, just before midnight, the Democratic National Convention announced that 99% of Democratic delegates officially crowned Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party presidential nominee after a five-day online ballot. That was just a formality because, within 32 hours of Biden's withdrawal, she had already secured the 1,976 delegates needed to become the nominee. Still, the party waited until the online vote was completed to make it official yesterday.
NOTE: She will announce her running mate today. The finalists are Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Both the presidential nominee and the vice presidential nominee will campaign in Pennsylvania today.
NOTE: Yesterday, it seemed that she had picked Tim Walz, but there is no official confirmation, and it might still be Josh Shapiro. We will know in the coming hours. Tim Walz has argued that Donald Trump is mentally unstable and is being given too much credit for things he knows nothing about. He told his party to refer to him as 'weird.' Now, all of them are using that catchword. However, there has yet to be an official confirmation that he has been selected.
NOTE: By avoiding a brutal primary election after Biden was forced to drop out amid bad poll numbers, the Democratic Party also avoided the chaotic open primary that led to their defeat in 1968 after President Johnson dropped out months before the Democratic Party Convention.
NOTE: Harris will officially accept the Democratic Party nomination in Chicago next week, becoming the first woman of color to lead a major presidential ticket in the United States since independence.
