HIT JOB: Explosive Allegations in Upcoming Book Claim Trump Disparaged Evangelicals in 2016. Timed Release Sparks Suspicions of Political Maneuvering Ahead of Iowa Caucuses
In case you missed this in the past 48 hours, with the Iowa caucuses just two months away and Trump leading in the polls, a reporter from a left-leaning publication, The Atlantic, has written a book against Trump, which will be out in about 10 days. The book claims that seven years ago, in 2016, Trump referred to evangelicals in Iowa as "pieces of shit" and "so-called Christians."
Interestingly, the book is coming out just in time, appearing to be a hit job against Trump and an attempt to sway public opinion in Iowa against him. This coincides with the increasing likelihood that he may secure victory against the wishes of the left and the establishment on the right.
Here are four takeaways and my own take.
1. In 2016, Donald Trump ALLEGEDLY referred to evangelical supporters of his rival Ted Cruz as "so-called Christians" and "pieces of shit," according to Tim Alberta's upcoming book.
2. The book claims that the incident occurred during the Republican primary, with Trump facing ridicule for mispronouncing "Second Corinthians" at Liberty University and feeling a sense of conspiracy among powerful evangelicals.
3. The book, titled "The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism," by Tim Alberta, will be published on December 5, 2023.
4. The sensational claims come amid the 2024 Republican primary, with Trump's rival, Ron DeSantis, receiving an endorsement from influential evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats in Iowa.
My take: Interestingly, the book is coming out just now, seven years after Trump allegedly made the remarks and just two months before the Republican primary in Iowa. This all makes it fishy and unreliable. Many Republican voters would see it simply as a hit job against Trump. And they may not be wrong.
I remember those comments, laughed at them for a moment, and forgot them. I was voting for Cruz. Trump not being “as Christian” as Cruz was the last thing on my mind when Cruz lost his momentum.
